Design Engineer (Mechanical)
Design Engineer (Mechanical): Join a collaborative team delivering safe, compliant mechanical designs from concept to construction; create drawings, specs, and analyses.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Design Engineer (Mechanical) to develop, review, and deliver mechanical designs for construction and infrastructure projects. The role will support project delivery by producing mechanical design calculations, equipment layouts, system schematics, and technical specifications from concept through detailed design and tender stages. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with project managers, multidisciplinary teams, and site personnel to ensure designs are safe, compliant, and constructible.
Key Responsibilities
Develop mechanical designs and deliverables for building and infrastructure systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, piping, pumps, compressors, process and utility systems, and equipment layouts in accordance with client requirements and applicable codes and standards.
Prepare mechanical design calculations such as heat load calculations, duct and pipe sizing, pump selection and system curves, pressure drop and flow calculations, ventilation and air change rate assessments, and thermal performance analyses; document assumptions, methodologies, and results in design reports.
Produce and review engineering drawings, schematics, isometric and piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs), equipment arrangement drawings, and installation details using AutoCAD, Revit, or other design/BIM tools; coordinate with CAD/drafting staff to deliver consistent, auditable drawing packages for review and construction.
Coordinate design interfaces with civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and control disciplines to identify and resolve conflicts; participate in multidisciplinary design coordination meetings and issue coordinated design revisions.
Conduct technical reviews, quality checks, and peer reviews of mechanical design outputs to ensure compliance with engineering standards, applicable codes, and project specifications.
Support tendering and procurement by preparing specifications, responding to technical queries, reviewing vendor data sheets, and providing design input for contractor proposals and construction methodologies.
Assist with site inspections, installation verification, and commissioning activities, including reviewing as-built information, witnessing tests, and liaising with site teams and contractors to validate design assumptions and resolve field issues.
Provide technical support during construction by reviewing contractor submittals, RFIs, method statements, and proposed design modifications; recommend mitigation measures when field conditions differ from design assumptions.
Maintain design documentation, revision control, and project records in accordance with company document control procedures and client requirements.
Contribute to continuous improvement of mechanical design standards, templates, detail libraries, and workflows to increase efficiency and quality across projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Relevant postgraduate qualifications or professional registration (e.g., PE, P.Eng., CEng, or equivalent) are an advantage.
Minimum 7 years' experience in mechanical design within construction, infrastructure, industrial, or engineering consultancy environments. Experience across building services, process, or infrastructure projects is required.
Demonstrated experience preparing mechanical design calculations, equipment selections, P&IDs, and construction-ready documentation for medium to large projects.
Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and providing technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience with Revit or other BIM tools for preparation of mechanical drawings and models; familiarity with mechanical design and analysis software (e.g., HAP, TRACE, Carrier, PIPE-FLO, AutoPIPE) is beneficial.
Strong engineering analysis skills and competence with mechanical design calculations including HVAC load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, pump and fan performance, and pressure loss assessments.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, schematics, and relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, local regulations).
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel for calculations and schedules, Word for reports) and common project document control systems and PDF markup tools.
Familiarity with preparing technical specifications, bill of materials, and cost input to support procurement and tendering is advantageous.
Behavioral Competencies
Detail-oriented and quality focused, with strong analytical skills and the ability to produce clear, constructible design outputs.
Effective communicator, able to collaborate with engineers, project managers, site teams, contractors, and clients in a professional and respectful manner.
Organized and able to manage multiple tasks, competing priorities, and revision cycles under tight project deadlines.
Practical problem-solver who proactively identifies design risks and proposes pragmatic, cost-effective solutions.
Willingness to attend site visits and work collaboratively across office and field environments as required.
Location & Reporting
This position reports to the Design Lead or Engineering Manager and will work closely with project teams, site construction personnel, and document control. The role requires regular presence at project offices and periodic site visits; specific site location and on-site expectations will be provided during recruitment.
Application Requirements
Please submit a resume highlighting relevant mechanical design experience, a portfolio or sample design deliverables (PDF extracts of drawings, reports, or calculations) where possible, and references to prior projects. Include details of software proficiency, professional registration, and any relevant certifications or training.
