Design Engineer (Civil)
Design Engineer (Civil): join a collaborative team delivering safe, compliant civil designs from concept to construction; grow your skills in site layouts, drainage, roads, and BIM.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Design Engineer (Civil) to develop, review, and deliver civil engineering designs for construction and infrastructure projects. The role will support project delivery by producing design calculations, drawings, and technical specifications from concept through detailed design and tender stages, collaborating closely with project managers, multidisciplinary teams, and site personnel to ensure designs are safe, compliant, and constructible.
Key Responsibilities
Develop civil engineering designs and design deliverables including site layouts, grading and earthworks plans, drainage and stormwater management systems, utility coordination, road and pavement sections, retaining structures, and erosion and sediment control measures in accordance with client requirements and applicable codes.
Prepare calculations, design reports, technical specifications, and bill of quantities to support designs and procurement, ensuring assumptions, methodologies, and results are clearly documented.
Produce and review engineering drawings and models using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other design software; coordinate with CAD/drafting staff to deliver consistent, auditable drawing packages for review and construction.
Coordinate design interfaces with structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and geotechnical disciplines to identify and resolve conflicts; participate in multidisciplinary design coordination meetings and issue coordinated design revisions.
Conduct technical reviews, quality checks, and peer reviews of design outputs to ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety requirements, and project specifications.
Support tendering and procurement by responding to technical queries, preparing scope clarifications, and providing design input for contractor proposals and construction methodologies.
Assist with site investigations and site-based design verification activities, including interpretation of survey data, site observations, and liaison with surveyors and site teams to validate design assumptions and produce as-built records.
Provide technical support during construction, review contractor submittals and RFIs, and propose design modifications or mitigation measures when field conditions differ from design assumptions.
Maintain design documentation, revision control, and project records in accordance with company document control procedures and client requirements.
Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and workflows to increase efficiency and quality across projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline. Relevant postgraduate qualifications or professional registration (e.g., PE, P.Eng., or equivalent) are an advantage.
Minimum 7 years' experience in civil design within construction, infrastructure, or engineering consultancy environments. Experience across site development, drainage, roads, and utilities is required.
Demonstrated experience preparing design calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction-ready documentation for medium to large civil projects.
Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and providing technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for preparation of engineering drawings and models; familiarity with other design or BIM tools is beneficial.
Strong engineering analysis skills and competence with design calculations for grading, drainage, hydraulics, and pavement design; experience using drainage and hydrology software is desirable.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, survey data, and relevant codes and standards.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel for calculations and schedules, Word for reports) and common project document control systems and PDF markup tools.
Familiarity with preparing Bill of Quantities, cost estimates, and procurement documentation is advantageous.
Behavioral Competencies
Detail-oriented and quality focused, with strong spatial awareness and the ability to produce clear, constructible design outputs.
Effective communicator, able to collaborate with engineers, project managers, site teams, contractors, and clients in a professional and respectful manner.
Organized and able to manage multiple tasks, competing priorities, and revision cycles under tight project deadlines.
Practical problem-solver who proactively identifies design risks and proposes pragmatic, cost-effective solutions.
Willingness to attend site visits and work collaboratively across office and field environments as required.
Location & Reporting
This position reports to the Design Lead or Engineering Manager and will work closely with project teams, site construction personnel, and document control. The role requires regular presence at project offices and periodic site visits; specific site location and on-site expectations will be provided during recruitment.
Application Requirements
Please submit a resume highlighting relevant civil design experience, a portfolio or sample design deliverables (PDF extracts of drawings, reports, or calculations) where possible, and references to prior projects. Include details of software proficiency, professional registration, and any relevant certifications or training.
